About European Law Monitor
Why are we here?
Most businesses, not-for-profit organisations, and individuals have little idea as to how new EU legislation comes into being, what democratic processes it passes through, and how EU legislation eventually becomes enacted in the EU member states.
More importantly, they do not know how to engage with the legislative process to make sure their voices are heard. Consequently, very often, they feel alienated from the EU, seeing it as remote, autocratic, interfering, undemocratic, and unresponsive to the needs and desires of its citizens.
So what are we trying to achieve?
Our aim is quite simple. To help close the gap between the European Union legislative process and its constituents by establishing a resource which will helps individuals, NGOs, charities, businesses, and anyone else interested, to stay abreast of the EU's legal and regulatory plans, and provide an advisory and research service, providing the opportunity for them to engage in the consultation process, thereby doing our bit to help ensure that the laws the EU creates are the laws that the people of the European Union want.
The Brexit Effect
With Brexit, the legislative position in the UK has become even more complicated - far from simpifying the legal relationship between the UK and the EU, the mass (mess?) of 'retained' EU legislation contained within the Brexit arrangements, the Withdrawal Agreement, and the various subsequent 'protocols' has muddied the waters. Much EU law continues to apply to the UK, both directly and indirectly, and the overlap between EU and UK national legislation can be very confusing, particularly in these days of political dis, and mis, information. Being a UK based service, but with a specialisation in EU law, puts us in a unique position to help citizens, companies, and other organisations find where they stand in the post-Brexit legal landscape.
Do we charge for our services?
We provide online information resources explaining the principles behind the EU's legislative processes, and a free 'first aid' enquiry and general information service on the EU, its policies and institutions.
What don't we do?
We do not under any circumstances carry out representational work. Ours is an information and research service, and we are just not equipped to do this. We can provide background information on EU law and how it might affect your case, but it is essential that if you have a situation that may result in court or tribunal proceedings that you instruct formal qualified legal representation to prepare your case, taking into account both national and EU law. It is strictly up to your legal representative to verify our research and prepare the relevant legal arguments.
